The best thing I did for my training and my competition numbers was I quit missing lifts in training.
The stronger you get, the harder it is to recover from missed lifts. It’s better to stop with some left in the tank, move to accessory movements and focus on recovery to build for the next session. When I started doing this, I got stronger faster.
By frequently missing, you’re also teaching your brain to be used to missing. This isn’t what you want at a competition. Teach your body that every training session should be a success and that’s what it’ll become accustomed to.
Also, this obviously opens up a larger window for the risk of injury. Any injury leads to time off and it’s likely an issue you’ll have to train around for the rest of your life.
If you find yourself missing frequently in training, then the numbers you’re calling could be off. There is a skill in picking weights on attempts correctly. This is maybe where Big Josh helped the most. He always picked numbers we could hit. We weren’t just picking numbers because it would be cool to hit a certain weight - there was thought to every weight.
